The Beginning of a Long Journey

With only one year of school left between myself and the end of this long college tunnel, the reality of finally having my own classroom is becoming more and more clear.  However, the visualization still needs a lot of work.  What will I teach?  Where will I teach?  Some questions I cannot answer yet.  Others I must start answering, namely, "What is my philosophy on teaching writing and reading in secondary education?"

This blog will begin exploring this last question.  As a future English educator, reading and writing are important to me.  I enjoy them both and easily see their relevance and importance in every day life.  Many of my students will not share these views with me.  It is then my job to help them discover the importance, and hopefully the fun, in these essential skills.  Doing so will not be easy, but I look forward to the challenge.

Fortunately, I do not have to face this challenge alone.  I have been blessed with a good set of teachers who have, in turn, guided me to a multitude of mentor texts to guide the development of my philosophies.  I will be exploring the ideas presented in these texts as I write this blog, examining ideas and deciding which to adopt to my own teaching style.  Texts by Kittle, Tovani, Gallagher, and others will play a major role in my shaping as a teacher.  I am thankful to have these wise guides to light my way through the rest of this tunnel.

I am excited to truly begin this journey.  Ideas have been stirring in my mind the last few semesters, and it's time to finally get them charted into reality.  I welcome those who wish to go along this journey with me and engage in the wonder of becoming an educator.
